The Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD) have successfully applied for over £2000 worth of 225 yew trees for Maghull’s green restoration at Rowlands Dell, following a rigorous and competitive application process, through the national organisation – The Tree Council, which also included some complimentary feedback about the important social value and the well-developed choice of species.

Rowlands Dell is uniquely positioned to offer a sharp/relief contrast as a tranquil haven next to the busy town centre. However, since the inception of our plans we have recognised that due to the close proximity to the busy centre, natural solutions needed to be found to shelter and promote the tranquil space. Consequently, the yew trees will be purchased and planted in the New Year, hopefully with the support of the community, to form a hedge along the sandstone wall, that will complement other natural features to provide natural screening from the traffic, reduce particulate and noise pollution, whilst promoting wildlife and biodiversity. This second hedge will complement the recently planted mixed wildlife friendly hedge (pictured) comprising of over 300 thriving trees provided by Mersey Forest.

Background.

This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. In the two months of Stage II, that was completed this month, with our NHS landowner partners (expertly installed by subcontractors – PR England Landscapers) using a health and wellness grant fund (representing Maghull’s largest green investment) have installed an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations to provide accessibility for the whole community. We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.

Thank you to:

  • The Tree Council their continued inspirational support.
  • All the amazing volunteers who have painstakingly removed the dominant, invasive, destructive Ivy from the wall, trees and ground, particularly around the proposed planting area of the sandstone wall.
