After any party or event the unsung heroes that help put everything back together again are always as important as the main event. In this case, the following day after the huge community bulb planting event at Woodend, highlighted in the Champion Newspaper (1), the incredibly supportive local resident – Joan, very kindly volunteered to help. We spent several hours raking, tidying, flattening the soil off the grass and back onto the 72 m bulb trench and grass seeded at the whole area. Earlier this year she gave the team a box of Heroes but her encouraging words, interest and her recent help have really been priceless. I am also aware that Joan has been a tower of strength to many other people in our community, so we would like to convey a huge thank you on behalf of everyone.

The second hand woodland themed shrub appeal to populate the large rear border at Bobby’s Wood has been gathering momentum. In fact, we were astonished when Malcolm and Carol (local residents) gave us 73 hydrangea cuttings and 70 hydrangeas and a couple of Lilly’s to follow from their garden. Also Rhona (local resident) has very kindly donated a couple of Budlea and other plants and recounted some fantastic childhood memories of playing in the wood. Consequently, we have planted about 30 young hydrangeas at Woodend along with the 73 cuttings and temporarily planted 40 more at Parkbourn until we have cleared a final place for them.

In the meantime, we have started a fresh appeal for unwanted woodland themed plants between October 2021 and March 2022, to be planted in the Bobby’s Wood/Woodend border or the refresh of our first project (2018) in Parkbourn, Maghull (including a new short crowdfund appeal at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/parkbourn) For plant donations please contact: woodendcwp@gmail.com and for continued updates check out: www.spacehive.com/woodend

Local Climate change action has never been more important: If you would like to express an interest in local tree planting events (between November 2021- March 2022), as many of you did last year when you helped to plant 8,000 in Maghull (!), please contact us on woodendcwp@gmail.com

Some people came for one hour, others brought young families, others stayed longer, but every little bit helped and really made a difference.

We will soon be replacing 130 of the 8000 trees we planted at the beginning of the year in Maghull. Which will be the warmup to planting approximately 2500 in December onwards, mainly at two primary schools and a MTC field.

Best Wishes,

FOMD CIC
