Welcome. Your support of the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) to help remove decades of neglect and debris in the Dell (adjacent Hare & Hounds pub) has been fantastic. We are returning this Saturday (17.2.24) at 10.00hrs and still need your support, to remove Ivy, litter but mainly focusing on planting a 42m wildlife friendly hedge, using 250 hedge whips and later a kind fruit bushes donation from Maghull in Bloom (MiB 22.2.24), that we will integrate into the hedge.

Task. Please check our website’s ‘event’ page at www.fomd.co.uk for more information and any last-minute changes. This one-hour event, without any commitment, will be focusing on planting the small tree hedge whips (provided free from Ben at Mersey Forest).

We have prepared the ground over the past few weeks by removing debris and turning the soil, so it should not be too difficult. However, it was astounding that every single spade full we turned over revealed litter in the form of cans, bottles, plastic and rubble. The trees will be supported with canes and spirals, and should time permit we will surround the trees with recently chipped wood (recycled from the Dell) to create an attractive mulch, to suppress weeds and provide hydration.

Equipment.

All you will need are sturdy boots, garden gloves, and importantly a spade.

If you are interested in helping to remove the ground Ivy to enable us to access the debris beneath, please bring a brush cutter/strimmer, protective glasses, boots and garden gloves.

A huge thank you,

to last week’s volunteers for being so friendly and hard-working in the one hour and more in some cases elsewhere! We are really amazed how much we are getting done there each time. On this occasion we removed 12 large bin bags of rubbish and a mountain of assorted debris, that we took to the recycling centre in several trips.

Dell Extra (independently after our one hour session last Saturday)!

  • A subway litter pick cleanup, was undertaken by Ken, Dee, Sam, Diane.
  • Lydiate litter pick, Diane litter picked another binbag of litter.
  • Esso Petrol Station, whilst Joanne was waiting for her car to be repaired she amazingly did another litter pick here.
  • Dell Session Cleanup: I undertook two trips to the recycling centre with the 12 bin bags of litter and the large amount of rubble debris. In addition, I maintained a few hundred trees on Park Lane.
  • Midweek at the Dell: thank you so much to Jill for collecting so much debris and litter throughout the week.

Pictured, our amazing volunteers: Graeme, Eni, Sarah (from the local family Saxon Tree Surgeons*), Dee, Sam, Joan, Diane, Linda, Ken, Christine (B) and Joanne. (Frank not pictured).  In addition, Jill and Chris (R) who helped immensely throughout midweek.

Overall, our one-hour sessions over the last 15 consecutive weeks have resulted in collecting 115 bin bags of litter, a huge array of debris and 24 (even more not bagged!) agricultural bags of tree and wall damaging Ivy, with multiple trips to the recycling centre. We have received some wonderful feedback and are clearly seeing the difference every time we are there.

This preparation is for Stage Two involving future green landscaping and planting to commence in April.

Looking forward to seeing you.
