The local family run Saxon Tree Services business, kindly responded to the Friends of Maghull & Districts appeal for urgent support to brush cut damaging ground ivy that had locked in decades of debris that needed to be removed before this year’s regrowth.

Unbelievably, the highly trained Sarah and her two sons (Thomas and Luke), worked from 8 AM (17.4.24) for four hours to make a huge dent by not only brush cutting the ground ivy on the west side of the Rowlands Dell project, but thoroughly raked out the worst area for historic debris and roots, ably helped by their enthusiastic dog companion – Mauser, who actually dug out an array of hidden debris! In recent months, Sarah’s kindness has also extended to being a regular expert volunteer on our Saturday one-hour sessions. More information about Saxon can be found in the following link:

This week we would also like to take the opportunity to thank the following:

  • Gerry (supportive neighbour) who has given us a second donation of free bulbs in the form of 50 Narine bulbs, which we are planting tomorrow amongst the wildflowers on the right-hand side of our Stafford Moreton Way Project, to provide some variety amidst the dominant oxide daisies. Jill (FOMD volunteer) has also planted several campanulas here also.
  • Jill (FOMD) has during the week gone above and beyond our one-hour sessions, to undertake approximately six hours during the week, kindly sorting the new debris unearthed during the second raking of the cleared south slope of the Dell, which we hope to cover soon with weed suppressing woodchip mulch donations from the amazing local family business – Paul Richards Tree Services Team.
  • A local charity shop attended the Rowlands Dell unveiling ceremony and kindly passed on a box of wildflower seeds, which was exactly what we needed for a couple of projects.

Whenever we undertake a project in Maghull, we are astounded by the multiple acts of kindness that are freely given by our community and the generosity of their kind comments throughout – is a complete joy.

If you would like to help, we urgently need:

  1. More brush cutting support. If you are a local business and can give any time at all to brush cut the ground ivy, it would be absolutely invaluable and we can work around any time that is best for you.
  2. Any volunteers who can help simply raking the surface to remove decades of debris, before we can move on to our next stage of safely re-establishing a haven for nature and the local community. We need lots of volunteers, perhaps a local business/organisation, who as a team, would like to spend a little time undertaking community work?

Please check out our next one hour, no commitment Saturday session in the following link: https://www.fomd.co.uk/events/

Best Wishes,

A new mountain of debris in the form of vegetation rubble and an agricultural bag of litter, in addition to 2 agricultural bags taken away by Saxon.

A second rake of the south slope has resulted in two streams of litter, which Jill kindly sorted throughout the week.

The after picture, showing the ground/root ivy and decades of litter clearance by the fantastic Saxon family team.

The fantastic family Saxon team: Luke, Sarah, Thomas and Mauser.

The tenacious ground Ivy before its removal.

One of the two streams of collected debris on our second rake of the south slope, gratefully sorted and disposed of by Jill throughout the week.

A huge thank you to Jill for spending so much time getting rid of the final debris, before the imminent weed suppressant woodchip donations from Paul Richards.
