After we had completed ‘Our One Hour for Maghull Initiative1’ last Sunday (9.7.23), Cllr Ken Hughes (Mayor of Maghull) and I took a leisurely stroll around the small but beautiful presented artisan market on the large pavement between One Central Delicatessen and the Furusato restaurant.
The ambience/cosmopolitan feel couldn’t have been better on a beautiful sunny day with soft music playing, lots of people sitting outside Costa Coffee and One Central, interesting crafts for sale from incredibly knowledgeable and friendly stallholders, fringed with the most amazing planters of flowers in which Maghull in Bloom & Don Billington have done the impossible by improving their displays year by year. Both car parks were totally full, demonstrating yet again that if you create an event in Maghull the increasing population will respond in their droves.
We spoke to Mandy who is a stallholder and organises the Artisan Market and complemented her on organising these events here and elsewhere and asked how we can help to grow the market. She said that from experience, they started a similar Artisan market in Ormskirk with a similar handful of stalls and by word-of-mouth quite often, it has now grown to over 60 stalls. She mentioned that many people had travelled to the Maghull Artisan market from places as far as Hoylake in the Wirral etc.
So, I guess, it is up to us to spread the word to put our market on the map. However, whatever transpires it must be done in harmony with the current shops to improve their footfall. Hopefully, we can improve upon the Christmas market which apparently was organised quite late.
