A huge thank you to all the fantastic volunteers who supported the Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) at the 17th consecutive one-hour weekly session, last Saturday (24.2.24), at the Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub).

Achievement. In just one hour, they amazingly wheelbarrowed tons of recycled woodchip from the Dell and spread it around last week’s newly planted 42m wildlife friendly hedge. The woodchip acts as a really attractive mulch to maximise the hedges growth by suppressing the weeds and improving hydration.

Despite preparing the hedge area we still removed a further 10 bin bags of buried litter and debris in the process, following over 30 years of neglect, in which we have discovered that the beautiful Dell has shamefully been treated as an open tip!

Please Help. We are returning this Saturday (2.3.24) at 10.00hrs and still need your support, to remove Ivy, litter but mainly focusing on wheelbarrowing the second mound of recycled woodchip from the Dell to spread around the hedge whips, to provide an attractive mulch to encourage hydration and weed suppression.

Please check our website’s ‘event’ page at www.fomd.co.uk for more information and any last-minute changes. This one-hour event, without any commitment.

Equipment.

All you will need are:

  • sturdy boots, garden gloves (essentials)
  • If you are interested in helping to remove the ground Ivy to enable us to access the debris beneath, please bring a brush cutter/strimmer, protective glasses.
  • If you want to move the woodchip please bring a wheelbarrow although we should have two on the day.
  • If you would like to litter pick and remove debris, please bring litter picker, garden fork or rake to remove some of the embedded litter.
  • If you’d like to trim the Ivy hedge, please bring hedge cutter, tree loppers.

Pictured, our amazing volunteers: Joanne, Diane, Sue, Joan (G), Mark, Joan (S) and Chris (B), (Frank not pictured).  In addition, Jill who often helps in the midweek.

Overall, our one-hour sessions over the last 17 consecutive weeks have resulted in collecting 130 bin bags of litter, a huge array of debris and 24 (even more not bagged!) agricultural bags of tree and wall damaging Ivy, with multiple trips to the recycling centre. We have received some wonderful feedback and are clearly seeing the difference every time we are there.

This preparation is for Stage Two involving future green landscaping and planting to commence in April.

Looking forward to seeing you.
