Since Maghull North train station was opened in 2018, it has not only become one of the busiest on the network already, but a group of volunteers are making it a beautiful community hub.

Achievements: Recently with the support of Sally Royston (Mersey Travel) local Cllr Phil Hart they have secured some funding and planters and together with their experienced green fingers and unbelievable passionate tenacity they have beautifully populated the planters, embankment, art installation borders with plant donations and cuttings to provide uplifting displays for the good of the community.

Thanks: They have our greatest admiration as it has been an arduous process only matched by the passionate determination over the past four years. So, it is with huge gratitude we would like to thank Sue, Christine, Eileen, Eileen, Pauline and Kath.

The Future: They have some wonderful aspirations going forward, with the perfect example to draw from at the neighbouring multiple award-winning Maghull Train Station whose amazing volunteers over the last 20 years have made this station one of the best in the UK.

Consequently, the motivational opportunity that has arisen from the newly re-elected Mayor Rotherham who has launched (24.7.24) a ‘Merseyrail in Bloom’ initiative to make stations brighter, greener and more welcoming has been perfect timing:

When the station opened in 2018, a broad community strategy group successfully created the Compassion and Conflict sculpture which was the first art installation to highlight the unrivalled pioneering psychological treatment offered by the now demolished Moss Side Hospital (and replaced by the Poppy Field housing development) for shellshock (now commonly known as PTSD) victims of WW1, who previously and tragically would have been shot for cowardice. The fantastic final extra, long awaited components of this installation are being finalised.

The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) also started a book swap scheme when the station opened and last year, we transferred this initiative over to the new volunteers along with one of our unused large wooden planters.

Conclusion: With heartfelt gratitude from our community for all your beautiful hard work and continued aspirations. With luck we might have two award-winning train stations on the Merseyrail network. Especially with an unrivalled ongoing unique art installation, beautiful planting, a community book swap scheme, children’s artwork, history boards and particularly a passionate motivated caring volunteer group.

Huge Thanks,

FOMD.
