Earlier this year the Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD)1 started to develop a children’s nature corner at our Woodend Community Woodland Project (to emulate our Parkbourn Project), at the junction of Liverpool Road South and Northway, with lots of excitement from the neighbouring Bumbles Nursery.

Bug Hotel.

We started by creating a beautiful bug hotel made from nine recycled pallets, populated with bug habitats by the local Scout group and a stunning roof made by a talented neighbour (Steve).

Nature Path.

The huge logs were donated and sited by using giant equipment3 that would not be out of place in the Amazon Forest, with the logs and almost one day’s work amounting to £1000. Which was generously and gratefully donated free by Andrew Morgan (Land Director, Anwyl Homes4.

The beautifully natural woodchip path was also donated for free by our amazing local tree surgeon Paul Richards2, who over the years has provided so much woodchip for our different projects it would amount to the size of a house!

Wildflower Area.

Bulbs. Out of the blue, we received a brilliant donation of 1027 bulbs from Ben Greenaway (senior project officer at Mersey Forest – who has provided immeasurable support and advice over many years). They needed to go into the ground urgently consequently we are incredibly grateful to the following volunteers who helped plant them over two bitterly cold days: On 3.12.23, Joanne, Ken, Joan and I were able to plant 452 bulbs (Camassia Leichtlinii Alba x 100), Tulip Triumphator white x 25, Tulip Purissima x 25, Leucojum Aestivum x 137 and daffodils. Then on the 5.12.23 Lisa Joan and myself planted 575 remaining miniature daffodil bulbs (Narcissus Thalia and Narcissus Mount Hood).

Wildflowers. With the help of the neighbouring nursery children, we are hoping to sow hundreds of wildflower seeds in early spring around the mass bulb planting.

Rope Barrier. Last week we purchased and installed stakes to support a rope perimeter to the wildflower area, along with some signage.

With huge thanks to the whole community for your limitless support to help make this wonderful transformation possible in so many ways. We can’t wait to see how it turns out in spring.

Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas
