The newly created beautiful woodland path has been created in Rowlands Dell (between the Medical Centre and Hare & Hounds Pub), to provide an accessible circular walk to improve health and wellness and simply to ‘dwell in the Dell’.
The path ascends the slope near the Westway entrance and eventually descends to join the old tarmac path, providing a journey with different nature views and experiences, which has been enhanced with tens of thousands of spring to summer bulbs (two types of daffodils, alliums, Camassia) planting of shrubs at junctions, and half a dozen new trees (full list on attached map), but will be further enhanced with hundreds of new trees, shrubs, wildlife pond/bog garden.
The planning and construction of the path has been undertaken to provide accessibility for all with careful consideration of gradients (to be Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant) within the constraints of a no dig policy (protecting tree protected order (TPO) tree roots), resulting in a porous resin bound pathway and partial woodchip, bordered with logs. In addition, a fence was required for certain gradients to provide a handrail for visitors with disability or frailty.
The accessible pathway is an integral part of several features representing one of Maghull’s largest green grant investments gratefully obtained by FOMD’s NHS partner.
Background.
This beautiful haven for wildlife has unbelievably been treated as an open tip for decades, where every inch has revealed a variety of pollutants harmful to wildlife. In our three-stage plan, stage I has resulted in Maghull’s biggest ever 46-week cleanup in which FOMD have removed 266 bin bags of litter and 25 tons of debris. In the two months of Stage II, that was completed this month, with our NHS landowner partners (expertly installed by subcontractors – PR England Landscapers) using a health and wellness grant fund (representing Maghull’s largest green investment) have installed an amazing legacy array of hard landscaping installations to provide accessibility for the whole community. We are now engaging in stage three to repopulate Rowlands Dell with woodland planting and need your help.
Thank you to:
- Richard England (PR England landscapers) who expertly installed the pathway.
- The NHS landowner’s.
- Community and Mersey Forest. Due to the exhausted NHS grant funding, we are enormously grateful for the community tree donations and 18 received from Mersey Forest (following the dissembling of a Tatton Park display including: Hornbeam, Cherry, Hazel, Hawthorne, Beech, Oak, Maple) that we transported from the Dell holding area, to provide further interest along the pathway, alongside many other future woodland zones of interest.
- The volunteers (Ros, Jill, Colin, Graham, Frank, and Christine) who kindly and cheerfully started planting the trees.
