Drapers Canal Bridge (11b) which connects Bridge Road and Rutherford Road over the Leeds Liverpool canal had become a dangerous slip and trip hazard particularly for the older community who use this high footfall connection to the shops and train station.

Trees and shrubs were growing through the bridge depositing rotten leaves which had weeds growing from it and were blocking the drainage holes causing deep pools of water. In addition, they were are also blocking the only street lamp and had become a haven for anti-social behaviour. Trip hazards have also been a problem from poorly maintained step edge trims.

Frustrated and worried residents have tried to find a resolution but both Sefton Council and the Canals and Rivers Trust suggested responsibility was with their opposite organisations.

An immediate solution was found when a resident contacted a Friend of Maghull & District (FOMD) volunteer and newly appointed town councillor– Cllr Joanne McCall. From past experience FOMD contacted the Canals and Rivers Trust who promptly took responsibility and actioned a thorough clean-up of the steps making it trip and slip free.

Joanne is currently following up further action to reduce the overarching vegetation to prevent further leaf debris and improve the lighting at night.

Well done to one and all.
