Remarkable Achievement for Maghull Centre Green Improvements: can you help?
24 February @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
| FreeA huge thank you to all the super friendly volunteers who supported the Friends of Maghull District (FOMD) at the 16th consecutive one-hour weekly session, last Saturday (17.2.24), at the Dell (adjacent to the Hare & Hounds Pub).
Achievement.
Astoundingly, in just one hour they planted a 42m wildlife friendly hedge using 250 Mersey Forest (pictured) hedge whips, comprising of wild Cherry, Rowan, Hazel, Crabapple, Hawthorn, Beach, with supportive canes, protective spirals and continued the unbelievable debris removal in the process, despite our previous soil preparation. What a difference the hedge will make in the future. Whilst, on Thursday (22.2.24), our kind friends – Maghull in Bloom will be transplanting their old surplus fruit bushes to plug the 18 gaps that we left to be integrated into the hedge, from their town hall path border.
Please Help.
We are returning this Saturday (24.2.24) at 10.00hrs and still need your support, to remove Ivy, litter but mainly focusing on wheelbarrowing the recycled woodchip from the Dell to spread around the hedge whips, to provide an attractive mulch to encourage hydration and weed suppression.
Please check our website’s ‘event’ page at www.fomd.co.uk for more information and any last-minute changes. This one-hour event, without any commitment.
Equipment.
All you will need are:
- sturdy boots, garden gloves (essentials)
- If you are interested in helping to remove the ground Ivy to enable us to access the debris beneath, please bring a brush cutter/strimmer, protective glasses.
- If you want to move the woodchip please bring a wheelbarrow although we should have two on the day.
- If you would like to litter pick and remove debris, please bring litter picker, garden fork or rake to remove some of the embedded litter.
- If you’d like to trim the Ivy hedge, please bring hedge cutter, tree loppers.
Pictured, our amazing volunteers: John, Diane, Paul, Chris (B), Ken (Mayor of Maghull), Chloe (MTC Leader), Joan, Sarah (from the local family business – Saxon Tree Surgeons*), Dee, Sam, Charles, Christine (R) (Frank not pictured). In addition, Jill who again helped immensely in the midweek.
Overall, our one-hour sessions over the last 16 consecutive weeks have resulted in collecting 120 bin bags of litter, a huge array of debris and 24 (even more not bagged!) agricultural bags of tree and wall damaging Ivy, with multiple trips to the recycling centre. The strangest finds this week have been two large carpets, a huge metal rim for a barrel and an axe? We have received some wonderful feedback and are clearly seeing the difference every time we are there.
This preparation is for Stage Two involving future green landscaping and planting to commence in April.
Looking forward to seeing you.
