Your Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) have another one-hour session, that you can simply drop into without any commitment, to help make a positive difference to yourself and the local environment.

On Tuesday (26.3.24) at 09.00 hrs. Any time you can spare would really be appreciated. We will be meeting and working in the rear tree enclosure at Old Hall Park, close to the Canal, with the closest access point from Hornby Chase (L31 5PP). If you can’t find us on the day, please ring 07507759813.

We are undertaking some simple but important maintenance work on a few of our previously planted 465 tree whips by removing any competitive grass from inside the tree protecting spirals to maximise growth, and simply reinserting canes and spirals wherever needed. It is a small but important job and may be the last time we need to undertake any maintenance here, fingers crossed.

Three years on, the 1,015 trees (part of Maghull’s 16,000) we planted (pictured) on this site (Old Hall Park) have been our slowest growing and need a helping hand.

Equipment needed: All you will need to bring are thick garden gloves, whilst some have found a rake or spade to be useful to pull the grass away.

Thank You for Your Kind Support in our last mid-week session (Tuesday 19.3.24) in which we achieved the following:

  • Miraculously we managed to get the 215 trees planted that we received from Mersey Forest at short notice to replace those that had been lost in Old Hall Park, with a further 50 leftovers planted at Pimbley Field, alongside another 50 we had replaced.
  • Surprisingly we even had time to complete the maintenance of some of the 550 trees in the first of two tree enclosures at Old Hall Park.
  • Also last week, we were able to remove canes and spirals from a mature hedge elsewhere, to be recycled in the final tree enclosure.
  • Unfortunately, the Scouts were not able to help on this occasion due to the Scout leader’s other commitments but they kindly volunteered to help when the evenings become lighter in May. We are now keeping our fingers crossed for the local Air Training Cadet Squadron, who were incredibly helpful with a similar task here last year.

Finally, huge thanks to the amazing volunteers who made such great strides with the tree planting and maintenance, including Colin, Jill, Joan, Aileen and Frank (not pictured). Pictured are the volunteers from 2021 who did a remarkable job planting the trees on this site in 2021 (pictured: Phil & daughters, George, Maurice, Paul, Irene, Jon, Matthew, Tom, Diane and Frank (not pictured)

We hope you can help; it will really make a big difference.

Many Thanks,

FOMD
