The Friends of Maghull & District (FOMD) has been organising ongoing one hour midweek sessions, to maximise the growth of the 15,000 trees we have planted throughout Maghull and want to take an opportunity to convey a huge thank you to the amazing volunteers who have contributed to the four sessions so far.

We have started at Pimbley Playing Field where two years on, the 2,500 trees (part of Maghull’s 15,000) we planted on this site, are looking really healthy. They were planted along three sides of the football pitches, comprising of:

  • Two tree enclosures (600 trees)
  • A 186m hedge (960 trees comprising of Hawthorne, Hazel, silver birch, Rowen, and Common Oak tree whips).
  • Under-planted and rewilded the original canal embankment with 900 leftover blackthorn, goose willow and Guelder Rose tree whips.

What They Achieved.

Over the four sessions we inspected and maintained every tree by removing any competitive grass from inside the tree protecting spirals to maximise growth, reinserted canes and spirals wherever needed, and replaced 50 trees that were lost. It was a small but important job and may be the last time we need to undertake any maintenance here, fingers crossed.

Huge Thanks To:

Monday (22.1.24) and Friday (26.1.24) we maintained the hedge and railway embankment tree enclosure.  With huge thank you to: Christine (R), John, Joan (first-time volunteer) and the Saxon Tree and Garden Maintenance Company* (Mike, Tom, Luke and Sarah) who also offered their fantastic professional free support. Thursday (1.2.24) we maintained the canal embankment tree enclosure. With huge thanks to: Jan, Joan (S), and another kind first time volunteer (not pictured).

Monday (13.2.24) we replaced 50 trees, canes and spirals/guards with recycling at its best, using unwanted trees from a residents garden and used canes and spirals from a now mature Maghull roadside hedge. With huge thanks to Joan and Joanne (pictured).

If you are interested in a one hour midweek climate action, to make a difference session, without any commitment, please keep a regular check on our event page (www.fomd.co.uk) where our next sessions for the week commencing 26.2.24 will be posted. They are generally scheduled just under a week in advance, so we can be sure of good weather.

Many thanks once again for your brilliant support and please check for future sessions to help make a difference.

All the best,

FOMD.

*The local ‘Saxon’ Family Team were a real pleasure to meet and were incredibly friendly, warm, professional, knowledgeable, hard-working, interested and interesting. Sarah is a qualified horticulturist and her family Mike, Thomas and Luke – who qualified at one of the country’s most prestigious horticultural colleges (Myerscough) receiving distinctions.
