The Friends of Maghull & District’s (FOMD) crowd funded Stafford Moreton Way Eco-Project raised £6500 to transform a high footfall unkempt green space and to promote recycling and eco-education (see www.fomd.co.uk/projects). Rainbow the life-sized rhinoceros crowned (11.6.21) the project to highlight endangered wildlife and plastic up/recycling. Rainbow is loved by the community, constantly being filled to its 100,000 clean bottle tops capacity and transformed into beautiful public community mosaics by local schools, in February 2023, which are on display on Stafford Moreton Way Parade (near Morrisons). https://www.fomd.co.uk/recycled-plastic-unveiled-as-stunning-community-art-in-maghull/
Stunning Up-cycled Artwork by local Squirrels Group.
On completion of the artwork, we appealed to other local organisations to emulate the artwork, which the intrepid Lisa Wilson & the Lydiate 1st Squirrels group rose to the challenge and recently completed the stunning poppies (main picture) bottle top mosaic, which was used for the St Thomas’s Church Remembrance Service.
Prestigious Ecology Award for Amazing Eco-Friendly Recipient of Our Bottle Tops
We previously reported ( https://www.fomd.co.uk/surprising-outcomes-for-maghulls-plastic-recycling/ ) that fascinatingly the majority of your donated clean plastic bottle tops are shredded, melted and moulded, using school-built machinery, forming stunning award-winning objects by students, led by their teacher Mr Patrick Link and colleague Colin, at their new Neston High School. Their work has led to several education awards over recent years and we mentioned that they were imminently hoping to add to this prestigious collection. Consequently, during our last 80,000 bottle top drop-off at the school we are absolutely delighted to report that they deservedly won, as reported from their school newsletter below:
Outstanding Commitment to STEM Award
We are proud to announce that Neston High won the ‘Outstanding Commitment to STEM award’ at the Educate Awards earlier this month (November). The glittering awards ceremony was held in Liverpool Cathedral with schools being nominated for various educational awards from across the North West of England. When presenting the award to Mr Link and Mr Cooper, Michelle Dow, Director of All About STEM said “Neston High School is dedicated to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). They run an innovative eco-friendly initiative recycling plastic in school to create attractive products for their community to buy. they connect with different schools to offer STEAM sessions and support and provide student activities and events which cover all sections of the STEAM umbrella”. Educate Awards – The North West’s largest education awards.
Please continue to donate your clean plastic bottle tops by inserting them into rainbow the rhinoceros. But please remember to clean them thoroughly first, as it makes life easier and safer for the children who are hoping to use them.
Wishing you a Merry Eco-Friendly Christmas,
FOMD.
Together making Maghull a better place to live.
