I hope you will join us, in congratulating Don Billington for not only his unprecedented 14 gold awards at the Chelsea RHS Flower Show, his many others awards elsewhere, his brilliant community work behind the scenes, but now one of his highest career accolades is that he has this year been deservedly appointed an RHS Judge.
Don is well known for his three world-renowned national plant collections which now have a permanent home at the recently and beautifully restored conservatories at Walton Hall (Warrington) where everybody can appreciate the collection and will also provide a learning experience for students from a highly respected local horticultural college (1).
Don has provided his expert advice for many people in our community, not least the years of supportive advice, inspiration, and creativity behind many of the displays he has provided to Maghull in Bloom, that uplifts the community on a daily basis.
Don’s career started as an apprentice at Liverpool City Council’s Botanic’s in Calderstones Park and then up until approximately 12 years ago he worked in the walled gardens of Croxteth Park. He has also worked closely with the RHS award schemes in schools, Men in Sheds, and still has monthly contact with the Irish Centre following a major project.
Somehow, he also finds time for his business, his many grandchildren and LFC!
In the short time we have known Don he has been incredibly generous with his expertise and time, only bettered by his friendliness and good humour. He really is a wonderful credit to our town and deserves every accolade.
