A beautiful rustic sign has been installed (15.12.20) at an entrance to Maghull on Bobby’s Wood, Woodend (at the junction of Liverpool Road South and Northway).
Mike Stock (Managing Director of MJS and Donor) Joinery (pictured) said,“ I am a local resident and was subcontracted to Kier Construction who was working on the new Rowen Medium Secure Unit (Maghull near Ashworth Hospital) when we learnt about the Woodend Project. Consequently, we along with Kier Construction wanted to help the local community. Kier donated the cost of the perimeter rail and we paid several hundred pounds to Gorse Hill Nature Reserve which we rounded up to £500 as a donation to the beautiful local nature reserve for the equally beautiful bespoke sign, which has been a real labour of love”.
Dr Frank Sharp (FOMD Trustee) added that, “we had originally approached Gorse Hill Nature Reserve near Ormskirk, which is owned by Derek Aiken and his son Jonathan (pictured), and although Derek has only made these bespoke signs for their nature reserve previously, he recalled some wonderfully nostalgic cherished memories of living and playing in the area, when as a 10-year-old he moved to Woodend on Liverpool Road South in 1938. Consequently, he undertook this specialised work for material cost only. The process involved obtaining the correctly dried oak from Wales, engraving, painting and treating with specialist protective resin prior to its installation. Derek has created a beautiful, cheerful, welcoming natural sign which is so much more than a sign because of his contribution”.
Rev David Hamlet (St Andrews Church, FOMD Member and pictured) stated that, “the welcome sign echoes my experience of how welcoming and kind Maghull has always been and never more so than during these challenging times. We would like to extend our gratitude to Derek, Jonathan and Mike for their wonderful community support. Gorse Hill Nature Reserve is a beautiful natural resource on our doorstep (10 minute drive towards Ormskirk) and is a real credit to Derek and Jonathan and a worthwhile trip for the whole family”.
