Our short notice appeal yesterday (18.12.20) for volunteers to help with tree planting at Moss Side Cricket Club at the junction of Park Lane and School Lane (L31 1HQ) and the all-round friendly, good-humoured and warm atmosphere ‘knocked us for six’ today (19.12.20).

Between 20 and 30 volunteers turned up to help with tree planting today ranging from people connected with the cricket club, neighbours and even their visiting bubble family members, and local families and children who simply wanted to help the environment. We managed to plant 229 trees in four hours. Everyone was ‘all out for 11’ (o’clock) when bacon butties were provided also! Although I’m not a cricket fan, but you are, I would wholeheartedly recommend this warm welcoming organisation to anyone https://www.facebook.com/Moss-Side-Maghull-Cricket-Club-363340323824/

Pictured: A few of the many amazing volunteers today, a waterlogged pitch can’t stop the cricket!

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time and energy to help out today, also including Dave Evans (local horticulturalist) who kindly provided some free brilliant advice regarding the irrigation of the field on request.

The background to the planting concerns the storage of 8000 small free trees (courtesy of Mersey Forest) in Maghull earlier this year, for planting between November and March. https://www.facebook.com/…/permalink/636772660384124 https://www.facebook.com/…/permalink/623664078361649

We started planting 1,452 trees at Bobby’s Wood (8.12.20) (although only 72 where from the 8000) St Georges Primary school have planted 20 in their grounds. We have plans to plant 4000 in January in two sites. https://www.facebook.com/…/permalink/775302356531153,

We are also hoping to add the planting to the BBC Country File postcode tree planting totaliser project. ‘Making a difference to the climate for the children and the children’s children’, as quoted from a nationwide appeal launched in the brilliant BBC Country File (6.12.20) program to plant 750,000 trees (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006t0bv) The 750,000 planting total is also symbolic because it represents every child who will be starting primary school in the UK in 2020”.

Please help make a difference together. If you couldn’t make it previously but are interested in the future planting please either email me at woodendcwp@gmail.com or contact Phil Dillon at Maghull Town Hall (01515263705)

A huge thank you to everyone took the time and energy to help out today, especially on the run up to Christmas.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and hopefully a better year than the last,

Friends of Maghull and District
