Many community organisations, residents, businesses have been lamenting the sad loss of the Champion newspaper in August after 28 years, firstly for the awful challenging times for their ever-helpful staff, but secondly for the fact that a community cannot be a community without communication. The Champion was delivered free to 160,000 homes in Sefton and West Lancs, each week, and championed and inspired good causes throughout. However, by necessity is had to budget by reducing its size and diluting the Maghull and Aintree news by creating a North Liverpool focus.
However, since then a handful of us at Maghull Town Council have sought to emulate good practice elsewhere (1, 2), to draft a quarterly A5 32-page magazine, which has been paid for with adverts and bulging with Maghull community stories. Following an editorial meeting on Monday, the proposed quarterly magazine, entitled ‘Maghull Press’, has been sent to the printers to produce 9,000 copies to be delivered free to every home in Maghull and 1000 to be available in popular venues before Christmas. Everyone in the small team played their part and we are enormously grateful to Stefanie Lawrence (MTC Finance & Admin Officer) who within her part-time role has achieved a miracle by formatted it and handling the advert payments.
We hope the magazine will stimulate interest, be informative and inclusive, whilst keeping everyone connected in challenging times.
